Plus, they soon exhibit a strong magenta cast in the shadows. But the moment the light goes yellow, they begin to suffer. The D800 & D810 are very good in daylight, no matter how crepuscular, even at high iso.

Owned all of them, and among these, the D3s is the camera to have if you plan to shoot very often at very high iso and in bad (tungsten) lighting. The D3s trounces the D810 (and the D800) in low light.īy the way, in very bad light (tungsten), the D3s is better even than the D4 (no idea about D4s). I have been using a D3S since they first shipped (with whatever ISO is needed to use a suitably fast shutter-speed) for all my wildlife photographs up until now and I have been more than delighted with the results that they deliver (even under available darkness!) but the announcement of the D5 is about to change that. I then use the EV on the camera body to adjust for individual situations as needed. My experience has been that Nikons are set to under-expose (possibly for the JPG shooters?) so my D3S cameras are all set for +0.6 EV in the Menu settings. If you shoot RAW you have a whole f/stop of headroom beyond the HL end of the in-camera histogram. The secret to keeping noise down with the D3S is not to under-expose - especially under low-light and high ISO conditions. Yes, folks, the D3s does do photography in 'available darkness' Crazy sharp, noise a non-issue in post and very unexpected color presence.

Took a copy into the tiny restroom there with only the light creeping in from leaving the door cracked a couple inches. So I'm in my fav cam store one day at that time and asked if I could mess with a D3s a couple minutes in the store. When the D3s was introduced, I shortly heard about its unworldly very high ISO performance. I'm fortunate to live in a large metro area that has a couple of happily advanced and stocked photo outlets.
